Three Summer Dances for Woodwind Quintet……………………………………………..…………………..…..……Joseph Turrin

Joseph Turrin’s Summer Dances were nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Classical Chamber Music in a recording by the Borealis Wind Quintet. Melodically beautiful and harmonically original, these short pieces are immediately engaging.

The Secret Lives of Rodent Divas……………………..……………………………….…………………………..…..Kathryn Mishell

Kathryn is having fun writing this piece for flute, clarinet, strings, and singing mice.

String Trio No.1 in B-Flat Major, D.471………………………………………………………………………………..Franz Schubert

Schubert’s String Trio in B-Flat was written in September, 1816, when the composer was 19 years old. This sparkling piece is a Classical delight. Like several of his other instrumental compositions, it is unfinished: a second movement peters out after 30-some measures. It will lead us gently into the final work of the concert.

Nonet in E-Flat Major, Op.139……………………………..…….……………………………….…………………Josef Rheinberger

Rheinberger (1839-1901) was an organist and composer from Liechtenstein who resided in Bavaria for most of his life. Composed in 1884, the Nonet in E-Flat Major is one of Rheinberger’s finest chamber works, written for a unique and richly varied ensemble that allows for a wide range of timbral possibilities. The piece showcases his skill in balancing the distinct voices of each instrument, resulting in a work that is elegantly tuneful and charming.
