Beautiful music is in store for you this season at Salon Concerts. You will be thrilled by stellar performances of familiar masterworks and enlivened by wonderful chamber music works you may never have heard before. Each concert pair will feature one work that celebrates a composer’s 300th or 150th birthday year.

Our season opens in October with the Oboe Sonata in G Minor by C.P.E. Bach in honor of his 300th birthday concert season. Oboist Rebecca Henderson and pianist Colette Valentine are back with Salon to dazzle us with their artistry. Horn virtuoso Patrick Hughes will join Colette to perform Romantic gems by Scriabin and Schumann. Artistic Director Kathryn Mishell will present the world premiere of her Trio for Oboe, Horn and Piano. Carl Nielson’s Fantasy Pieces for Oboe and Piano, and the expressive and melodic Trio by Carl Reinecke will round out the program.

November brings back the Aeolus String Quartet, the vibrant young players whom the Miró Quartet mentored, and who now are the graduate quartet at the Juilliard School. They will say Happy 300th Birthday to Gluck with a Trio Sonata, and will play the wondrous Ravel F Major String Quartet. They’ll be joined by another Austin-trained Juilliard student, the fabulously talented Joseph Choi, to play the Romantic blockbuster Piano Quintet by Amy Beach.

January’s concert features guest violinist Annie Chalex Boyle, our own Douglas Harvey playing cello, and one of Austin’s gems, pianist Nancy Garrett. She will open the program with a beautiful Bach Chorale Prelude arranged by Busoni. Anna, Doug and Kathryn Mishell will play a luscious Trio by the Russian Romantic Alexander Gretchaninov, in honor of his 150th birthday. The string players will join Nancy to present one of the masterpieces of piano trio literature, Schubert’s B-flat.

In April, Elisabeth Kufferath and Stephen Perry will be back with a fascinating program. It will open with the rightfully famous Beethoven Piano Sonata Op. 27, No. 2 (the “Moonlight”) which will prepare us for a profound reference to that piece in the Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 147 by Dmitri Shostakovich. After the break, lightness will prevail in the form of Mozart’s Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major. Finally, we celebrate Richard Strauss’ 150th birthday with his lush Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-fl at Major, Op. 18.

Come join us for this exciting season of chamber music!
