Joseph Smith

Joseph D. Smith is the Concertmaster of the Austin Opera Orchestra and a violinist with the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Originally from Charlotte, NC, Joseph holds a B.M. in Violin Performance from UT Austin Butler School of Music. He has performed with the Key West Symphony, the Charlotte Symphony, the New World Symphony, and served as Principal Second Violin with the National Repertory Orchestra, where he also performed as a concert soloist. In alternative styles, Joseph has recorded with such artists as Christopher Cross, Kat Edmonson, Okkervile River, and Peter Gabriel, and has recorded on Austin City Limits Live numerous times. Some of his greatest influences are conductors Andrew Litton and JoAnn Falletta, violinist Andres Cardenes, and the members of the Miro Quartet. As a chamber musician, Joseph has regularly performed concerts with the Austin Chamber Music Center and Salon Concerts over the last 2 decades. As an educator, Joseph is the orchestra director at Bowie High School in Austin, TX, and previously served as teaching faculty with the Austin Chamber Music Center. Joseph also participated in a World-Premier recording of Polytemporal Music by composer Robert Motl, funded by the American New Music Society. Joseph performs on a Kurt Widenhouse commissioned violin, anno 1999, and Heinz Dolling bow ca. 1952.
